Meskwaki Senior Services hosted a hands-on class on Friday, March 6, where community members gathered to learn how to make tagaani, a traditional Meskwaki corn-based food. The class was led by Kay Waseskuk and focused on sharing knowledge about cultural foods made from locally grown Meskwaki corn.
Participants were guided through the first steps of the process for preparing tagaani. During the class, everyone completed steps 1 through 6, learning how to prepare and grind the corn as part of the traditional method. Each person took home their ground corn to continue the process later. When they are ready to prepare and enjoy their tagaani at home, participants will complete steps 7 through 12, finishing the preparation and cooking process using the ground corn they made during the class.
Ketebi (Thank you) Kay, for helping keep these traditions strong and for teaching others how to prepare this important corn-based food to enjoy with their families.
