Pickling Class

On Wednesday, October 15, the Meskwaki Senior Center hosted a fun and flavorful refrigerator pickling class, an idea suggested by Tony Waseskuk, who thought it would be an enjoyable group activity. Participants followed an online garlic dill pickle recipe, using a simple brine made of water, white vinegar, sugar, and kosher salt.

Seniors selected their own ingredients and filled their jars with a variety of seasonings pickling spice, black peppercorns, garlic cloves, mustard seed, bay leaves, dill sprigs, and, for those who like a little heat, red pepper flakes. Lead Cook George Puentes prepared the brine, and everyone had fun shaking their jars once they were sealed.

The pickles will sit in the refrigerator for three days before being ready to enjoy. Seniors will pick up their jars on Friday and taste their creations on Saturday. Vestana Lasley added a creative touch by designing the pickle labels.

It was a great afternoon filled with laughter, learning, and tasty anticipation!
