Orange Shirt Day

Yesterday, September 30, Meskwaki Nation departments came together in a powerful sea of orange to observe National Orange Shirt Day and Every Child Matters.

Orange Shirt day is a day to:

🧡 Promote awareness about the traumatic impact of Indian residential school systems on Native American communities in the United States and Canada.

🧡 Honor and Remember the children forced into Indian boarding schools – the survivors and those who never returned home.

🧡 Celebrate that we are able to have our own school where we include Meskwaki language, customs, music, and traditions for our children.

These photos capture the solidarity, respect, and enduring spirit of our tribal community as we honor the survivors of Indian residential and boarding schools and remember the children who never made it home. By wearing orange, our staff and community members reaffirm our commitment to healing, remembrance, and ensuring that the history of boarding schools is never forgotten.

Thank you to every department and individual who participated, shared their voice, and stood up for the healing of our families and future generations.
