📖 Purpose of the Meeting

The meeting invites community members to share thoughts, concerns, and ideas about protecting deer on the Meskwaki Settlement from Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

🦌 About Chronic Wasting Disease

  • First detected: Meskwaki Settlement, 2023

  • Affected animals: Wild & captive cervids (deer, elk, moose, caribou)

  • Cause: Misfolded prion protein spread through saliva, nasal secretions, and other excreta.

  • Impact:

    • Always fatal

    • Causes severe long-term health issues in infected populations

    • Independent of deer density (because prions persist in the environment for years)

⚠️ Key Risks

  • Spread: Direct contact and contaminated environments.

  • No cure/vaccine: Once infected, removal is nearly impossible.

  • Deer management strategies: Focus on reducing prevalence through population control, isolation, or quarantining infected areas.

  • Evidence: Studies (e.g., Wyoming) show strong population-level effects from CWD.

Takeaway: This is a community meeting to discuss prevention and management of CWD in local deer, a serious, fatal wildlife disease with long-term environmental impact.
