Changes to the Meskwaki Higher Education Program (MHEP)
In a Tribal Council meeting held on August 2025, the following changes were made to the Meskwaki Higher Education program:
Changes occurring SPRING 2026
Students who are enrolled in another tribe will be required to provide information to MHEP so that we may verify funding you receive from said tribe. If funding is granted from the tribe in which you are enrolled, MHE funding will no longer be provided to you. For those who have already indicated enrollment in another tribe and verification has occurred, funding will cease as of Spring 2026.
We anticipate funding for descendants will be reduced beginning SPRING 2026, to an approximate maximum of 1300.00.
Changes occurring FALL 2026
Both Tribal and descendant students who do not live within the state of Iowa will no longer be eligible to receive funding from MHEP. This change will occur FALL 2026.
If your residency is in the state of Iowa, but you are attending out of state, you will still receive funding.
Please note that if we learn that a person has tribal enrollment in another tribe but has not indicated such on their application, their application and funding will automatically be denied.
