R.I.S.E MMIW Walk/Run

May 19, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

RESCHEDULED TO MAY 19th!
May 5th is National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day (MMIW) – Indigenous women are murdered at a rate 10 times higher than the national average (U.S. Department of Justice). In 2016 there was a report of 5,712 missing native women. Today, we LOST count. You will often see the hashtag #MMIW, but it doesn’t stop with Indigenous women alone. It also includes Girls #MMIWG, two-spirited individual’s #MMIWG2, and men.
Meskwaki RISE is doing a “hybrid” event going on from May 3rd thru May 5th on a virtual race at your own pace walk/run/bike/hike any place and anywhere or IN PERSON walk May 19th @ 5:00 PM (Registration) 5:30 – 7:30 PM (Walk).
Meskwaki RISE will be placing informative posters around the route on the Settlement (Tribal center to Casino stop Sign). The posters will contain MMIW facts.
Help us spread awareness by participating and sharing a photo of you and your family during your exercise on the Meskwaki RISE Facebook page or text your photo to (641) 481 – 1239 and we will share it for you.
The mission is to be in solidarity with the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Men, Girls, Two-Spirited, grieving families, and individuals working on the frontlines to end this epidemic of violence against Indigenous people. We ask that you wear red during your choice of exercise to support this National Day of Awareness. We hope you can join us in this event to support our missing relatives and bring them home.
We would like to say thank you to the following tribes and domestic violence programs for collaborating with us to increase awareness of this ongoing epidemic. Let’s bring them home and #RISEFORMMIW #BRINGTHEMHOME
Oglala Sioux Tribe, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, Ho-Chunk Nation, Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Bear program, Dancing Warrior Riders, and Sac & Fox Nation Iowa Tribe of Kansas
