Day 2 of the 20th Anniversary of the American Legion Legacy Run included at pit stop the Meskwaki Travel Plaza. After fueling, 250+ American Legion Riders were treated to a performance by the Meskwaki Settlement School’s Danceversity dance troupe. The troupe demonstrated different styles of Meskwaki dance and taught the riders a few words in our Meskwaki language. The presentation concluded with a Round Dance, inviting all the riders to join in the circle.
Afterwards, Dixie Kapayou of the Robert Morgan Post 701 spoke on behalf of the Tribe and accepted a plaque from David Heredia Jr., National Chairman of the American Legion Riders and Chief Road Captain for the organization’s annual event. Heredia also presented each dancer and drummer with “Challenge Coins.” Heredia explained that the coins are a symbol of how the Legion rides together and serves together as champions of hope. As he presented the coins to youth, he told them, “You are true champions, because you’re keeping your legacy alive.”
Kapayou reflected, “Giving is not just about making a donation, it’s about making a difference. Keep on giving to others. We, Robert Morgan Post and the Meskwaki Tribe are proud of you guys.”
From the American Legion website: “Since 2006, The American Legion Legacy Run has raised $16 million for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. These funds have provided over $6.2 million in scholarships to support children who lost a parent in active military service on or after September 11, 2001, or whose post-9/11 parent has a VA disability rating of 50% or higher.” #LegacyRun2026
