Pre-Diabetes (formerly IGT or IFT)

Pre-diabetes is a condition that precedes type 2 diabetes. It’s also called impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFT), depending on how it is diagnosed. People with pre-diabetes have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but they aren’t elevated enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. Research studies have found that lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes among high-risk adults. Lifestyle interventions included diet and moderate-intensity physical activity (such as walking for 2 ½ hours each week). In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a large prevention study of people at high risk for diabetes, the development of diabetes was reduced 58% over 3 years. With early intervention and lifestyle adjustments, pre-diabetes can be slowed, stopped, and even reversed.

Blood sugar screening and Pre-Diabetes

If you participated in our screening during the walk/run and you had a blood sugar level over 100 mg/dl you may be eligible to participate in our Diabetes Prevention Program. Call the health clinic or wellness center if you have more questions. If you did not participate in the screening but are interested stop into the health clinic for a blood sugar test to find out if you may be eligible.
